Crowning glory!

We felt that we should throw a party to celebrate the re-opening of our beautiful salon!

Our hair is on our head mainly for protection from UV rays and radiation.

It also regulates temperature by retaining heat in cold weather and by helping heat to evaporate in high temperatures.

Hair follicles are surrounded by nerve endings, so to touch the scalp or by having your hair washed it can be a sensory experience.

The term crowning glory can be true for some. Hair can be used to create our own personal style and create a unique personal identity.

Our scalps are covered in thousands of hair follicles and even with significant hair loss, follicles remain. They shrink and stop producing hair however, with stimulation and sometimes have the capacity to grow back.

This is particularly true if there has been an injury but it can take a long time.

Male patterned baldness is linked to shrinkage of hair follicles. Hairs become shorter and eventually will stop growing altogether.

Hormones, in particular testosterone play a huge part in male baldness. DHT, a derivative of testosterone, binds to hair receptors which can trigger shrinkage in susceptible follicles.

This is determined by genetics and some people are more susceptible than others.

Alopecia Areata is caused by an autoimmune disease, causing patchy baldness. In some cases if the damage is limited, the hair can grow back with help.

Alopecia Totalis means total baldness which is also believed to be due to an autoimmune disorder. Whether the hair grows back again, depends on how long ago you developed it and various treatments can help but it doesn’t always grow back.

Hair loss in women has similar pathways to male patterned baldness.

Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders and severe iron deficiency can also contribute to hair loss.

There are lots of treatments available out there but first, it is very important to see a specialist.

A pharmacist, GP or trichologist will be able to diagnose the problem and recommend personal treatments.

Hair has the potential to grow back but it’s also important to remember that this doesn’t always happen.

Hair loss and thinning is a subject that is talked about a lot in our salon. A quick chat with a professional can put your mind at rest quickly.
