Hair Care

Questions, questions…

We felt that we should throw a party to celebrate the re-opening of our beautiful salon!

As hair professionals, we are frequently asked questions about hair care.

Here are a few answers to some popular questions or problems that we get asked a lot!

  1. How can I get a salon finish at home?

If you’re looking to get a big DIY bouncy blow dry, the choice of brushes and products are the key to success! After washing, apply a volume booster such as mousse or spray then blast the hair in different directions giving volume to the root. Finish off by smoothing with a large round brush. Or better still– book an appointment and leave it to the experts!

  2. How often should I get my ends trimmed?

A lot depends on the general condition of the hair. Healthy hair roughly grows ½ an inch a month. So every 6 weeks is ideal for shorter styles and 6-8 weeks for longer hair. Of course it is a personal choice however keeping the hair trimmed stops split ends forming and making it look thicker by blunt cutting.

  3. How often should I get root touch up?

Our clients have an average time of between 4 and 6 weeks for a root tint. This will depend on how much grey there is and the colour that is used. The darker the colour, the quicker grey roots will show.

  4. Can I change my hair colour?

The short answer to this is, yes. The longer answer is that it will depend on what colour you are already, whether it is dark and you want to lighten it or light and you want to be darker. You may need to add pigment before changing tones to avoid giving off a green hue. The condition is very important as this could be the reason you can’t change colour until it improves.

  5. Why do I need a skin test pre colour?

We are very clear about skin testing. Any new client that attends the salon for colour must be tested at least 48 hours before the appointment. Anyone that has recently had a tattoo, or started new medication, are pregnant or having a new colour – particularly darker must also have one. It is imperative to make sure there is no allergy to hair dye. The test is very simple and takes just a few minutes. It can be done at home or in the salon.

  6. Is there a way of making hair look shiny and less dull?

Shampoo and conditioner choice play a part in your hair’s appearance. Choose one that is suitable for your hair which will work with it. After drying, apply a serum or oil if it is coarse. Directing the hair dryer down the hair shaft can close the cuticle down making it appear shiny. By applying a gloss at the end of a colour service can also make the hair appear translucent and shiny.

  7. What makes hair look orange during bleaching and lightening?

Bleach will gradually lift out all the pigment from the hair. If the bleach isn’t left on long enough, the last few shades of orange and yellow are the last to lift out from the hair so it just needs to be re-applied or left on longer. The darker the hair, the longer it takes to lift out all the colour.
