While we recognise some home products are good for your hair, others aren’t.
Our customers always ask if professional products differ from shop-bought…
Take shampoo, for example: supermarket brands use stronger detergents, like sodium lauryl sulphate, which can strip hair of natural oils and can make colour fade quicker.
Supermarket products are mass-produced to target as many customers as possible.
In cheaper products, there can be a build-up of silicone. These are non-water soluble; they can create an instant, almost slippery feel to the hair, which on first use feels good but over time can clog up the hair shaft, blocking good nutrients, which leads to dry hair and breakage.
Salon ranges use better quality products which are highly concentrated rather than diluted.
Professional products use less harsh, sulphate-free ingredients, leading to better condition and longer-lasting colour. They work out more economically in the end because you use much less.
Salon formulas use water-soluble silicones, giving good protection with no build-up.
Professional products sometimes have patented technology such as bond builders or more complex protein ingredients. These are for actually repairing the hair on a much deeper level. They can be expensive, but they will be good for your hair and do what they say they will!
This comparison can be made across the board, including styling products and home colourants. The ingredients will be better for your hair and comparatively economical considering the amounts you will need to use. Far more for a cheaper product and much less for salon products.
Of course, one’s budget has to be taken into account, and if salon products are off the table, generally speaking, the more something costs, the better it is in terms of quality.
