Donating hair to charity – things to know!

Every day, someone will donate their hair to a nominated charity. There are many reasons why hair donations are in high demand and probably one of the most important is to provide wigs for cancer patients.

A very worthy cause is the Little Princess Trust charity, providing wigs and hair pieces to children whom may have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatment or certain medical conditions.

It typically costs £700 to purchase a wig for a child. This incorporates the cost of making fitting and styling afterwards.

Are you, or is someone you know, thinking about donating hair to charity?

This can be a wonderful thing to do, however there are some important things to note before you start on the journey!

Doing research into the chosen charity

There are many worthy charities in desperate need of hair donations but each one will have different requirements before you can donate.

There will be a minimum required length. Some will ask for 10 or 12 inches as a minimum or more and some may have a shorter limit.

How is the condition of the hair you’re donating?

Most charities accept any colour hair including grey but some won’t accept bleached or over processed hair.

Make sure the hair is washed, conditioned and has been well looked after in the run up to having it cut. It must be free of oils and all hair products.

When it comes to cutting, it should be tied up and cut above the band.

Once it is ready to send off, ensure it is packaged correctly and check on any forms that might need to be filled in. It’s always a good idea to speak directly with your chosen charity to clarify anything that you’re not sure about.

Here at 77 The Hill, we have carried out many cuts where the hair is ending up as a donation and we are always delighted to help.
