Fine? Greasy? Dry? Coarse? Frizzy?
Or is it just normal? More of that later…
Everyone has a type or combination of the above.
Hair type is determined by many factors, but the hair follicle and roots are determined by genetics and hormones during embryonic development.
There can be exceptions to this, for example, during chemotherapy or other cancer treatments, which can change the structure of the follicle and hair bulb.
Ageing can slow down the growth process and produce less pigment in the hair, the key factor is how it was formed genetically.
Nutrition is extremely important for healthy hair, especially as we get older and during pregnancy or illness.
The state of the hair shaft away from the root and follicle is determined by outside factors such as chemical lightening, dying and even the weather.
What we put onto our hair when styling or if we are exposed to the elements, in particular the sun!
Oily or greasy hair is caused by too many sebaceous glands. Some people simply have more than others. There are ways to keep it at bay by not touching or stimulating the hair follicle, as this produces more oil.
Reduce washing with shampoos that strip the hair, which may cause the scalp to overcompensate.
Use a simple conditioner and don’t overuse styling products, as if they’re not rinsed properly, it will cause a build-up and the hair will appear limp.
Frizzy hair is caused by dehydration. When moisture enters the hair shaft, it dries it out, making it swell and frizz.
Deep conditioning treatments will help alleviate symptoms and avoiding where possible, excessive heat and even rough towel drying can dry out the hair.
This is considered to be hair that is balanced. Not too greasy, not too dry, with little or no damage, making it manageable and easy to style.
Normal hair has a sealed cuticle and ultra-smooth texture. It will be easy to comb through and appear shiny and smooth.
