Goodbye 2024, hello 2025!

Happy New Year to you all

As we see out the old year and welcome the new one, it’s always a time of reflection.

Every year, we wonder where the last one has gone and how quickly the time has gone!

Hairdressing can be about 4-6 week blocks. This is the average time period between haircuts or a root colour. This makes us more aware of how time is flying by!

Speaking of roots…

How often do you get your roots touched up?

Every 4 weeks?

Every 6 weeks?

Or even every 2-3 weeks?

The need to cover grey hair will depend on a few factors…

The most important one is how much grey is present in the natural hair.

Greying usually starts at the temples or parting, or both.

This is often because those areas are exposed more to the elements. The area at the nape and underneath the back of the head, keep their pigment for longer. Sometimes, the hair can grey quickly all over and the need to cover it up every 2-3 weeks is not uncommon.

Mostly, the pigment stays in places that are covered up and grey will show at the sides and parting.

Colouring the roots will also depend on the preferred colour choice.

Generally, the lighter the shade, the more it blends in with the grey. Therefore 6 weeks for a top up is about right.

Some clients prefer to keep a little grey for a more natural look and a semi-permanent dye is appropriate. Grey coverage is good with this type of colour and anything from 70% to 90% coverage is normal.

There are 2 types of semi-permanent dyes. A true semi will simply wash out after a couple of washes as it is only pigment going on the hair shaft.

Any hair dye that uses developer, acts as an oxidising agent and penetrates the cortex, making the dye last longer. There are various volumes of developer and this in turn will determine colour intensity and longevity.
