A Day in a week in a month in any year!

As any hair stylist will confirm, every day is different.

We always hope that each day will go well but there are odd occasions when things don’t always go according to plan.

With the best will in the world, there are always occasions when a customer isn’t as pleased as they perhaps could be with their hair.

Sometimes, a quick snip will correct a fringe left too long or toning down a colour that wasn’t expected to be that coppery!

Happily, these things don’t happen too often but we are always very conscious of the sometimes fine balance between client expectations and what is actually possible to achieve.

Client consultation is extremely important!

There are so many things to establish when deciding on a haircut or colour.

First up – lifestyle…

We ask whether our client plays sports, or swims, or how often they wash their hair. Whether they can look after their hair well or if they want something easy to manage with minimum styling.

What style will suit their face shape and will it be suitable for their hair type?

Colour is a little more complicated…

The current hair condition must be considered and whether there is existing colour on it. Was it a box dye? If so, tests may need to be carried out to ensure compatibility with professional colour.

Feasibility must also be established. For example, if someone has dark brown hair and wants to be blonde, this can be problematic. It is really important to explain the likelihood of achieving the colour.

It might be that it can be achieved in two sittings or even three!

Toners might be needed which will need to be topped up regularly to avoid unwanted yellow tones appearing.

Cost will always be a factor – especially when lightening form dark to light.

We have a responsibility to our customers to keep expectations realistic.

It’s okay to say no to something that is likely to fail.

A client should always be clear about the chances of achieving what they want. Images can be a great way of communicating and once it’s established how it is likely to turn out and the cost implications known, the customer can say yes or no.

If you’re thinking of changing your hair, please come in for a consultation, we would be very happy to help.
